How do you achieve Faux Bronze effect?
I would like to try and paint some of my sculptures Faux Bronze but I'm not sure how to go about doing so.
I've tried just shooting tamiya bronze on top of gloss black but it doesn't show the detail and color well enough.
I would like to make it look more like the ones released by Bowen Designs. I'm not sure how the colors are added.
I was thinking I should just shoot polished aluminum and then clear colors over it. And maybe bronze on top on certain areas. But I don't know if all of this work will be worth it.
Any suggestions will be great.
Thanks in advance.
Hi There,
I had written a quot; How toquot; article on painting the Faux
Bronze Bowen Hulk in Kitbuilders Magazine issue #57.
You can order the issue from:
I hope this helps
hello Danno,
Thank you for the link and the heads up. I will most likely pick up that issue for that article.
But I wanted to ask if I will be needing a special and rare type of paint? I don't know if I want to paint it Faux bronze if I require an expensive set of paints.
And just wondering, are you the official painter for Bowen Designs? Because the paint job is awesome especially on these Faux bronzes.
Here is an EXCELLENT SBS on how to do a faux bronze finish in acrylics. It is done by Luca Piergentili of Figurallia Miniatures. A real tallented guy! HTH,

Thank you for your very kind comments.
Yes, I do paint paintmaster prototypes for Bowen Designs (including the Faux Bronze line)
I have just bought the kitbuilders #57 with an awesome tutorial by Danno himself.
One thing he mentioned to use was Testors metalizer Bronze?
I tried to look for that product but no one seems to carry it. I can't even find it on Testors official site.
Does anyone know where I can find it?
I would love to use a bronze paint that doesn't have any flaky/grainy pigments like the Tamiya bronze does.
And thanks Sambaman1 for that link. I have read through it a couple of times. Very interesting technique. Although I'm not very good with dry-brushing.
for the metalizer. I also found it in my local HobbyTownUSA
Thanks for the tip. I never go to that site for paint supplies but I should from now on.
Although I still can't find the MM Metalizer Bronze.

Are those the only available metalizer paints from Testors? The closest thing to Bronze I see is like Brass.
Oh and I never used these paints. Do I need any pain thinners for them?
I read one person saying you can use it straight from the bottle but not too sure.
The Testors Metalizer Brass is the paint you need
(Bronze was a spelling error in the article)
The Testors metalizer paints are airbrush ready, just
pour and spray. All that you need is some lacquer
thinner to clean your airbrush out and you should be
good to go.
Thank you again Danno.
It's good that you pointed out that bronze was an error. I would have looked through every store to try and find it.
Oh and do you suggest the first black base coat to be glossy or dull? I'm not sure if it will effect the paint tone in the end either way.
Thanks again |
