What Was Your First Comic Art Purchase and Do You Still Own It?
Oceans and I thought this was a cool topic to find out what your first comic art purchase (mentioned occasionally in other threads) was and if you still own it?
I've mentioned mine before but I've repeated it for the thread and those who haven't seen the earlier mention.
Mine was circa 1988 when I went into a comic shop in Sydney called quot; The Land Beyond Beyondquot; (which is no longer around) and saw 2 original pages for sale framed on the wall. They were a Marshall Rogers Daughters of the Dragon splash page from Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu and a Paul Gulacy splash page from Sabre.
I remember being blown away that it was possible to buy the original art and agonised over spending $150.00 on the Marshall Rogers page. I ended up returning to Canberra (where I was then living) without buying the page but I finally decided to go for it and arranged the purchase by phone with my credit card.
I haven't looked back since Here's the page -
My page from Jim Lee's WildC.A.T.S. #6 was my first page I bought, long before I was into statues or art, and I think I wasn't collecting comics anymore at that time, either.
Jim Lee and Ron Lim are the artists that piqued my interest in comics when I was younger, so I bought the page because.. well.. it's awesome. Plus, WildC.A.T.S. was a good read.
Yes, I still own it.
Is this just for published art?
My first con sketch was a David Mack Poison Ivy.
First published piece was a Georges Jeanty/Karl Story page from the American Way mini-series.
my first con sketch was a micheal turner fathom
My first con sketch was a Jim Lee Wolverine at the 1990 San Diego Comic Con. Still have it.
My first original art purchase was a Rob Liefeld New Mutants #93 page I bought from Rob for $40 at, I believe the 1991 San Diego Comic Con. Wish I still owned it but I traded it a few years after I bought it for Valiant comics. How sad is that, Valiant comics....I would love to track it down but I have a feeling it may be lost forever.
Wow, some great ways to start off your collection - Jim Lee, David Mack, Michael Turner etc.
And I'm including published pages and unpublished work like con sketches

The first con sketch I ever got was a Ternimator by Chris Warner back in 1990, and I still have it
And the first published piece I bought back in '95 or '96, a page from Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire , issue #2 by Kilian Plunkett. Still have this one too. |
