Soon to be the same in Japan?
I know this will sound crazy, but I would like to visit Chernobyl at some point ... call it morbid curiosity, but I think a tour of the facility would be fascinating.

hmmm....do you have the same wishes to ground zero at NYC, or perhaps Auschwitz?
Go ahead and jay back on the couch Jess...tell me when these feelings started.....
Actually, I've already been to Ground Zero numerous times to pay my respects, and see both the damage and reconstruction.
And yes, I would probably go to visit Auschwitz as well.
These are all points of human history, granted dark points, but points none the less ... and there's something to be learned from each of them.

Seeing ground zero or Auschwitz I can understand, but to visit a place giving off so much radiation is beyond my comprehension.
Japan is not the same situation.
Chernobyl the whole core exploded spreading cesium which has a long half life. There was no containment at all. About as bad as it can get.
The radiation released in Japan is no where near as close.
This is still unfolding but I think as long as they keep fighting it they can get the upper hand in time. One of the better places to get info here...
I think there is a tour of Chernobyl. From an Engineering POV it would be interesting to see.

Personally, I don't think that the short term exposure, like from a day trip for a few hours, would be dangerous. I was watching that news story, and some of the points of interest in it (like the abandoned amusement park) would make for some unbelievable photographic studies.
It's all about time and levels of exposure.
You can visit safely if such things are given consideration and careful monitoring.
We are surrounded by sources of radiation every day. Even bananas have natural levels because
of the potassium. Very low of course.

Probably the same documentary that is saw. The amusement park was spooky as hell. It would make for some great photo opportunities, especially the wildlife roaming abandoned structures. |
